128: The Student Becomes the Supervisor with Melissa Kurrle, MA, CCC-SLP

This week’s episode is a little different - Melissa interviews Leigh Ann on all things related to supervising graduate students during their clinical practicum. Back in the day, Melissa was Leigh Ann’s graduate student. And now, Melissa is preparing to take on her first graduate student.

Topics covered:

  • What are some things you wish your clinical supervisors told you when first getting into your career?

  • What are some resources you have identified that have been helpful in developing your skills as a supervisor?

  • Do you have an outline or anything of how you want a student to progress across their practicum?

  • How candid are you with your students-either with their skills, or even how confident you feel in certain areas? Do you share your frustrations with the field or try to let them learn for themselves?

  • How do you toe the line of letting your student fail in order to learn, and stepping in to teach?
