152: The One Thing: Empathy in Uncomfortable Situations with Lauren Hermann MS, CCC-SLP

This episode is about empathy in uncomfortable situations (e.g. when colleagues challenge your practice, patients get angry with your recommendations, doctors/nurses push back). We will discuss how stepping out of your own experience and expertise and putting energy into understanding the experience, anger, and frustration of others can be a powerful tool towards mutual growth, even if it’s the most uncomfortable part of your job.

Key Takeaway:

Empathy in uncomfortable situations is a powerful tool to achieve mutual growth.

Thanks for these great resources, Lauren!

Lauren Hermann is an SLP with 8 years of clinical experience in a variety of medical settings across the U.S. She grew so passionate about the impact of our field while realizing how underecognized SLPs are that she wrote and published a book about our profession, titled “But My Speech Is Fine.” With the help of two other SLPs and one radiologist, she and her team conducted and published survey research about interprofessional differences between radiologists and SLPs. Lauren feels strongly about building conversations over conflict and has dedicated part of her time to making changes within interprofessional education and practice. She is a member of the American Interprofessional Healthcare Collaborative (AIHC) and served on the AIHC Task Force for one year. Lauren owns and operates a small copywriting business called The Copy Clinicians, which serves to help other SLPs and healthcare business owners market themselves with empathy.
